Our democracy is in crisis. We’re currently facing an avalanche of voter suppression that we haven’t seen since Jim Crow. In just the first few months of 2021, Republican state lawmakers have introduced hundreds of bills suppressing the vote.

We’re in the midst of a voting rights crisis. We’re seeing attacks on access to the ballot box across the country, and it’s time for Congress to make protecting voting rights a top priority. Passing the For the People Act is the best way to start that process.

This is our chance to tear down the racist barriers to voting that have plagued our democracy for too long. This legislation would help to: streamline the voter registration process, eliminate discriminatory voter ID laws, end gerrymandering, re-enfranchise the formerly incarcerated, and reform our broken campaign finance system -- all of which would build power in Black and Brown communities.

It would also help curb the kinds of corruption and lack of transparency we’ve seen at the highest levels of our government -- from Trump hiding his tax returns from the American people to the outsized influence of the wealthy, white donor class. While corruption ran rampant during the Trump presidency, we know it didn’t start there. Unless we take a stand, it won’t end there either.

Only bold reforms will help us build back a better democracy, and those come in the form of the For the People Act. I urge you to pass this bill so we can build a system that supports all of our voices, as a true democracy should.
