Demand Oregon Re-Enfranchise the Incarcerated

Oregon leads the nation in accessible voting. But right now, there are thousands of people who are barred from having a say in how they’re governed: those currently in prison.

We can’t have an elected government that represents all of us when we continue to exclude large groups of Americans from our elections and deny them the ability to fully participate in our democracy.

Send an email to your legislators and tell them it’s time to bring SB 579 to a vote and pass it to restore voting rights to 13,000 incarcerated Oregonians. Make your voice heard now:

The right to vote is a precious and hard fought for civil right—one that is currently being stripped from thousands of our fellow Oregonians as an unjust punishment.

Right now, the voting rights of nearly 13,000 Oregonians—who are disproportionately Black or Latinx—are taken away while they’re imprisoned. But we can restore those rights by passing SB 571.

SB 579 would allow those in prison to register to vote, update their voter registrations, and vote in elections based on where they resided prior to incarceration. It would act as a lifeline between them and the communities they intend to return to after completing their sentences. It would give them a say over the many laws that control their lives in prison and the lives of their loved ones at home.

Outdated, racist voter suppression laws have no place in Oregon. If we want a government that works for all of us, the first step is to make sure we are all guaranteed a say in who represents us.

It’s time for Oregon to continue to lead the pack as a paragon of accessible democracy by passing SB 579. I am counting on you to push for this bill to be brought to the floor and get passed as soon as possible.
